The Las Positas College Math and Language Equity and Achievement Subcommittee to SEA, the Student Equity and Achievement Committee, is committed to providing students with the foundation they need to succeed in higher education and the 21st Century. For many of our students, this means strengthening basic skills in reading, writing, mathematics, learning skills, study skills, and English as a Second Language. However, for math and English in particular but also for some ESL courses, this strengthening will be done in the context of transfer-level coursework now that Assembly Bill 705 has become law. Las Positas College and the MLEA subcommittee commits itself to "maximizing," as the law puts it, the potential for students to finish transfer-level coursework in English and math in one year and in ESL in three years. It is particularly focused on those students who have been disproportionately impacted by systems, whether in the classroom, discipline, placement, or student services realms, that do not serve their needs.
