Rights
As a student receiving financial aid at Las Positas College, you have the RIGHT to:
- Know that the information pertaining to your financial aid application and awards is kept confidential as mandated by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act https://www.laspositascollege.edu/admissions/privacy.php
- Know the Cost of Attendance to attend Las Positas College: https://www.laspositascollege.edu/financialaid/budget.php
- Seek financial aid counseling
- Know what types of financial aid programs are available at Las Positas College, including all federal, state, and institutional aid programs
- Know the application procedures and deadlines for each of the available aid programs
- Know how your financial aid was determined, including what resources (assets, earnings, parental contribution, etc.) were considered in the calculation of your Student Aid Index (SAI): https://studentaid.gov/help-center/answers/article/how-sai-calculated
- Know that you can accept or decline any of the financial aid awards offered to you, and understand how your aid will be disbursed https://www.laspositascollege.edu/financialaid/bankmobiledisbursements
- Know the financial aid refund policy and repayment policy
- Know how Las Positas determines your Satisfactory Academic Progress https://www.laspositascollege.edu/financialaid/sap.php (SAP)
- Access the U.S. Department of Education’s central database for student aid at StudentAid.gov. to view a detailed history of their federal student grants, Lifetime Eligibility Use and loans.
- Know specific consumer information such as retention and graduation rates, campus crime status and athletic information. This information can be found on the National Center for Education Statistics College Navigator website.
Responsibilities
As a student receiving financial aid at Las Positas College, you have a RESPONSIBILITY to:
- Complete all applications and forms accurately
- Comply with all financial aid application deadlines
- Reapply for the FAFSA or the CA Dream Act (CADAA) application each year you are enrolled at Las Positas College and wish to be considered for financial aid
- Provide correct and accurate information. Misrepresented information on financial aid applications and forms is a violation of Federal law and may be considered a criminal offense.
- Read and understand all documents you are asked to sign and keep copies for your own records
- Provide any additional documentation and new information requested by the Financial Aid
- Request assistance if you have questions or do not understand the information provided to you
- Check your “My Portal” and student email regularly to ensure there are no outstanding documents
- Know and comply with the rules governing your financial aid awards
- Notify the Financial Aid office of any financial aid awards you receive from outside resources (including scholarships, grants, Veteran's Benefits, tuition waivers, or other educational/tuition assistance) not already listed on your Financial Aid Award Summary
- Seek advice from a tax professional to determine if any portion of grants or scholarships are considered taxable income
- Complete Entrance Loan Counseling and a Master Promissory Note (MPN) if you take out a Federal Direct Loan or are a first-time borrower, and complete Exit Loan Counseling before you graduate, transfer, or withdraw from Las Positas College
- Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
- Use financial aid for educational expenses incurred while attending Las Positas College
- Repay any over-award of financial aid
- Follow the Maximum Time Frame ‘150% rule,’ which is part of Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP). This rule limits federal aid eligibility to 150% of your program length
- Notify the Las Positas Admissions and Records, Financial Aid Office, the Department of Education, and/or your Direct Loan servicer if you change your name, address, phone number, enrollment status, or anticipated graduation date.
- You must contact the Las Positas financial aid office if you do not want the full amount awarded
- You must notify the Financial Aid Office in writing if you are receiving student financial aid at another institution while attending Las Positas College
