Work Experience Courses

Work Experience is an easy way for working students to
earn units and learn valuable work skills.

The California Virtual Campus-Online Education Initiative has recognized
LPC’s WRKX courses as meeting the highest standards for online courses in
the California Community College system.

Course Offerings

WRKX 94. Occupational Work Experience/Internship, for students who work in positions related to their major field of study. Earn 1 to 8 units per semester.

WRKX 95. General Work Experience, for students who work in positions that are not related to their major field of study. Earn 1 to 6 units per semester.

Course Benefits

  • Earn units for working and taking a course with a light workload.
  • Learn the top 12 work skills employers look for most in job candidates.
  • Develop career skills such as job interviewing and résumé writing.
  • Interact with other working students in online discussions.
  • Boost your GPA. If students do the coursework and submit it on time, most students earn an A in the class.
  • Earn the extra units you need to qualify as a full-time student. Because you
can take WRKX multiple times, up to 16 units, some students take WRKX
for 2 or 3 units each semester to meet full-time student status.
  • Get ahead at work. Students have gotten raises, promotions, and better relationships with their supervisors because of WRKX classes.

Course Information

  • WRKX courses are asynchronous, online, and designed for students
    in all majors.
  • To qualify for WRKX, you can work in a part-time or full-time, paid or unpaid/volunteer position and must work a minimum of 75 paid hours or 60 unpaid hours during the class.
  • WRKX courses offer “variable” units. The number of units you can earn is based on the number of hours you will work for the duration of the class. For example: 75 paid hours or 60 unpaid hours = 1 unit; 150 paid hours or 120 unpaid hours = 2 units, and so on.
  • Register for the section that corresponds to your work hours and unit(s) by viewing the Units/Hours/Section Chart on the FAQ page.
  • You can earn a maximum of 16 units of WRKX.
  • Units are transferable to the CSU system and other universities, but colleges vary in the number of units they will accept. Check with Counseling and your prospective transfer institution about the number of accepted transferable units. Units are not transferable to the UC system.

  • In collaboration with your work supervisor and instructor, you will create learning objectives you will accomplish at your workplace during the semester.
