Las Positas offers assessments for; English as a Second Language (ESL), Spanish, French and Chemistry.
English and math course recommendations are provided by the Guided Self-Placements.
Students are encouraged to complete the guided
self-placement to assist with the development of
a student educational plan and determine proper placement into English and mathematics courses. Students who plan to earn an associate degree, earn an associate degree for transfer, or plan to transfer to a four-year university are encouraged to complete the guided self-placement process.
ENGLISH GUIDED SELF-PLACEMENT High school graduates with a cumulative, unweighted grade point average of 2.5 or higher will self-place into transfer-level English Language & Composition (English lA). High school graduates with a cumulative, unweighted grade point average below 2.5 are encouraged to take transfer-level English Critical Reading & Composition Expanded (English lAEX) or non-transfer-level/one level below transfer English Integrated Reading & Writing II (English 104).
High school graduates will self-place into the appropriate mathematics class using three criteria: their cumulative, unweighted grade point average, the highest-level mathematics course completed, and the grade received in that course.
The ESL Assessment is comprised of 75 multiple choice questions measuring grammar (45 minutes) and a short written essay (30 minutes).
Spanish and French Assessments
The Spanich and French Assessments are intended to place students with previous foreign language experience in an upper level course. The assessments are multiple choice only, no listening or speaking required.
The Chemistry test is comprised of 44 multiple choice items. Students are allowed 45 minutes to complete the test. A non-programmable calculator is permitted and a periodic table is provided.
