Alternative Media and Assistive Technology

What is Alternative Media?

Alternative media (Alt Media), also called alternative formats, are accessible versions of course materials for students with disabilities. These formats include things like electronic text (Word, PDF, or ePub), Braille, large print, audio, and tactile graphics. They help students who have difficulty using standard printed materials access the same content as everyone else.

If you need your textbooks or class materials in a different format, the Alt Media Tech Specialist can help convert them, so they work better for you, whether that's on a screen reader, in large print, or as audio. The goal is to give all students equal access to learning.

What is Assistive Technology?

Assistive Technology (AT) includes tools and software that help people with disabilities access information and complete tasks more independently. This can range from simple items like magnifiers to advanced tech like screen readers, speech-to-text programs, and Braille displays.

Options include screen readers, text-to-speech, speech recognition, and more, available in the High Tech Center or for checkout, to help students succeed in their classes.

How do these accommodations serve students at Las Positas College?

These accommodations help students with disabilities access course materials, participate fully in class, and succeed academically by providing equal access to learning through tools and support tailored to their needs.

Who do these accommodations benefit?

These accommodations benefit students with a wide range of disabilities, including those with visual impairments, hearing loss, learning disabilities like dyslexia, physical limitations that affect mobility or writing, and psychological or neurological conditions such as ADHD or anxiety. By providing accessible formats, assistive technology, and personalized support, these services ensure students can fully participate in their education and have equal opportunities for success at LPC.

How can I receive these services?

Students at Las Positas College can receive accommodations by applying to the Disability Resource Center (DSPS) and providing documentation of their disability. You’ll need to meet with a DSPS counselor who will determine your eligibility. If eligible, the counselor can refer you to Bianca Hernández, the Alternative Media Technology Specialist (behernandez@laspositascollege.edu), who will assess your needs and help set up services like alternative media and assistive technology. For assistance, students can contact the DSPS by phone (925) 424-1510 or visit their office on campus in Building 1600, Room 1615.
