How do I become an Officer?

Officers are vital to student government; we cannot function as a successful student body without one. Becoming an officer allows you to participate in numerous leadership opportunities on and off campus, giving you the ability to meet and work with members on campus who can effectively create change on campus for the betterment of the student body as a whole. Students shall be provided an opportunity to participate in formulation and development of district and college policies and procedures that have or will have a significant effect on students.  This right includes the opportunity to participate in processes for jointly developing recommendations to the governing board regarding such policies and procedures. Based on California Education Code 51023.7, District and college policies and procedures that have or will have a “significant effect on students” includes the following:

  • grading policies;
  • codes of student conduct;
  • academic disciplinary policies;
  • curriculum development;
  • courses or programs which should be initiated or discontinued;
  • processes for institutional planning and budget development;
  • standards and policies regarding student preparation and success;
  • student services planning and development;
  • student fees within the authority of the district to adopt; and
  • any other district and college policy, procedure, or related matter that the district governing board determines will have a significant effect on students.

Members of the Exectuive Board shall be elected to a 1 year term of office by the last week of April. The term will begin the first day after Spring Session ends and the end of the last day of the Spring session the following academic year. Members will be elected by the student body.

For any student who is interested in becoming an officer, please contact the Student Life Office Staff to answer any questions. Election packets are posted on our LPCSG website beginning Spring semester for students to complete and submit to the Student Life Advisor or the Student Life Assistant.

How do I become a Senator?

Senators are an important part of the Las Positas College Student Government. Being a part of student government will enhance your college experience by awarding you the opportunity to represent students on the local, state, and federal level. You will also get to put on exciting events that improve student life. Senators have important responsibilities, such as communicating with other students on a regular basis in order to be able to address students’ concerns, attending weekly meetings, sitting on campus-wide committees, attending workshops to improve skills and gain knowledge relevant to student government, recruiting new members, attending retreats and conferences, and helping out with events. For more information on how to become a Senator, please review the Senator Packet. The Senator Packet is also located in the “Forms” section of our website. Senators are required to attend all LPCSG meetings. Please review "Dates & Deadlines to Review the Schedule.

Any student interested in becoming a Senator must meet all requirements (listed in the Senator Packet) and submit a completed packet to the LPCSG Office. Per the LPCSG Bylaws, there is a limit on the number of Senators in the LPCSG. If there are 30 or more active Senators, prospective members will be placed on a waitlist and notified when a position becomes available. Prospective Senators on the waitlist may be given the opportunity to participate in some Student Senate activities, as decided by the Executive Officers. If a Senator position becomes available, a committee of Senators chaired by the Vice President will evaluate candidates and make a recommendation to the Student Senate, who shall then vote to approve that decision by a two-thirds (2/3) majority. A Student Senator shall be recognized after attending a student senate meeting, an orientation with the Student Government Vice President, and submitting 25 completed student surveys during the academic year.

How do I become a Member At-Large?

Members At-Large are essential to the processes that allow the Las Positas College Student Government (LPCSG) to function. Becoming a Member At-Large offers an opportunity to contribute to the many efforts made by the LPCSG without making the full commitment. This position allows interested students to volunteer at the multitude of events the LPCSG puts on including the Market (our monthly food pantry), Welcome Week, and many other volunteer opportunities. Other duties may be assigned the active Members at Large by the Executive Board when they are available, allowing those interested to take part in the internal process within LPCSG. Unlike Senators, Members at Large are not required to attend Internal, Governance (campus-wide), or regular LPCSG meetings, but are more than welcome to sit in and provide their valued input.

Any student interested in becoming a Member At-Large must meet all requirements (listed in the Member At Large Packet) and submit a completed packet to the LPCSG Office. Per the Bylaws, there are currently no limits on the number of Members At-Large within LPCSG. A Member At-Large shall be recognized after an orientation with the Student Government Vice President and submitting 12 completed student surveys during the academic year.
