Credit for Prior Learning
What is Credit for Prior Learning?
Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) may be earned by students who satisfactorily pass authorized assessments approved by discipline faculty in eligible courses approved by the District.
Types of Credit for Prior Learning include:
- Credit by Exam
- Credit by Portfolio
- Credit by Industry Recognized Training (IRT)
- Credit by Military Joint Service Transcripts (MJST)
What is the process?
STEP 1: Student Information
The student fills out STEP 1 of the form to petition for Credit for Prior Learning approval. The student then sends the form to Academic Services via email (lpc-priorlearning@laspositascollege.edu) or drops it off in 1690.
STEP 2: Student Eligibility Verification
The Academic Services representative verifies student eligibility, then sends the form to the VP of Academic Services for verification of course eligibility.
STEP 3: Course Eligibility Verification
The VP of Academic Services will check the box to indicate which Credit for Prior Learning method will be used, and then the form is routed to the Department Coordinator of the course being petitioned and their Academic Dean.
STEP 4: Portfolio Review / Examination Completion
The Department Coordinator of the course being petitioned fills out STEP 4, gets their Academic Dean’s signature, then sends the form to the Curriculum & Scheduling Specialist to create a course.
STEP 5: Credit for Prior Learning Course Creation
The Curriculum & Scheduling Specialist creates a course for the student to receive the credit for based on the information provided by the Department Coordinator in STEP 4, then sends the form to Admissions & Records for final processing (lpc-evaluations@laspositascollege.edu).
STEP 6: Admissions & Records
The Admissions & Records representative enters the determination on the student’s record.STEP 1: Student Information

The VP of Academic Services will check the box to indicate which Credit for Prior Learning method will be used and review the supporting documents provided by the student, then the form is routed directly to the Curriculum & Scheduling Specialist to create a course.
STEP 4: Credit for Prior Learning Course Creation
The Curriculum & Scheduling Specialist creates a course for the student to receive the credit for based on the information provided by the VP of Academic Services, then sends the form to Admissions & Records for final processing.
STEP 5: Admissions & Records
The Admissions & Records representative enters the determination on the student’s record.
- Credit may be earned by students who satisfactorily pass military courses on their Joint Services Transcripts (JST) and at the Community College of the Airforce (CCAF). Students wanting to petition for credit for prior learning with their Military Joint Services transcripts must do so by going through the Incoming Transcript Evaluation Process in the Admissions and Records office.
- Student may request their Joint Service Transcript on https://jst.doded.mil/jst/
- Students may upload their JST to the Military Articulation Platform to see if their
courses are approved for Credit for Prior Learning. https://veteransmapsearch.azurewebsites.net/default.aspx
- Students please note the "Summary" page at the end of your JST will need to be included in the upload for it to be processed through this platform accurately.

These courses will apply towards certificate and degree programs at Las Positas College using the course equivalencies listed.

Student Eligibility
Students may petition for Credit for Prior Learning if they meet the following:
- Are currently enrolled in the semester in which credit is to be earned
- Are in Good Academic Standing (Not on Warning, Probation, or Dismissal)
- Have less than 15 units earned through credit by examination
- Are not currently enrolled in the course petitioning for
- Are not currently enrolled in nor received credit for a more advanced course in the same subject (may be waived by dept.)
Credit for Prior Learning Forms
Please note that students petitioning for credit by exam, portfolio, and industry recognized training may use the forms below to submit their petitions.
- Petition for Credit for Prior Learning: Credit by Exam or Portfolio
- Petition for Credit for Prior Learning: Credit by Industry Recognized Training
- Students petitioning for credit by industry recognized training will need to attach their industry recognized creditentials to their petition.
Students wanting to petition for credit for prior learning with their Military Joint Service Transcripts must go through the Incoming Transcript Evaluation Process in the Admissions & Records Office.
