Is medical insurance needed or billed to use the health & wellness center?
No, services are available to all enrolled students that pay a health fee. No medical billing is done at the SHWC. You do not need to have insurance to use the Student Health & Wellness Services as your prepaid student health fee covers most services. However, your student health fee does not cover hospital care, referrals to specialists, medication, diagnostic testing, dental, vision, or emergency transportation. For these reasons, we strongly recommend you obtain health insurance.
Do I need Medical Insurance?
Absolutely, 100% YES! The Nurse Practitioner will refer you to the appropriate medical provider, as needed, within your insurance network for complex and chronic conditions. If you do not have medical insurance, the health center staff will provide you with your health insurance options, including low cost medical, dental, and vision plans & private student insurance. The Health & Wellness Center will work collaboratively with your medical provider treating minor illnesses and injuries, as well as, preventative health care services, and will refer you out for chronic and complex conditions.
What if I do not have Medical Insurance?
Medical Insurance is not needed for medical services at the SHWC. Students without medical insurance are encouraged to make an appointment at the Student Helath & Wellness Center. We will help you understand your insurance options and find a no cost/low cost health plan that you are able to afford. Our staff will work with you to keep you healthy & well and referrals will be provided to medical providers and specialists in the community as needed.
Are any services available to faculty and staff of the college?

In accordance with state community college regulations, all enrolled students will be charged a Health Service Fee of $21 per Fall and Spring semesters. This fee is used to support health services for enrolled students. In accordance with State Assembly Bill 982 and Section 76355 of the State Education Code, exemptions are only granted for the following: Students who depend exclusively upon prayer for healing in accordance with the teachings of a bona fide religious sect, denomination, or organization; and students who are attending Las Positas College under an approved apprenticeship training program.
