5. Staff Reports

LPC: Computer/Network & Audio/Visual

  • Audio-Visual
    • The audio-visual upgrades for the Theatre were completed over the summer. This work included installation of the new projection system, control interface with stage inputs, mixer location updates, and enhancements within the control room. A few minor punch-list items remain, but the project is substantially complete.
    • The audio system upgrades for the Track and Field area were also completed over the summer. This included installing new speakers, an updated controller, and an improved audio interface. While the installation is complete, the system is not yet fully operational—there are still some performance issues to resolve before it can be considered finalized.
    • All classrooms in Building 1800 will be upgraded to the new audio-visual standards. The equipment has been ordered, and installation will be scheduled once it arrives.
  • Computers
    • As reported at our last meeting, Phase I of the computer replacement lifecycle has been completed. Systems for Phase II have been ordered and are now on site. The team is currently testing updated images before deployment. Once testing is finalized, notifications will be sent to the respective areas scheduled for replacements. We will provide a further update to the committee once installations begin.
  • Telecommunications
    • At our previous meeting, we noted that the Telecom project had been placed on hold due to compatibility issues identified within our Hyper-V environment. Those issues have since been resolved over the summer, and the project is expected to resume within the next one to two weeks.
  • Construction
    • The Department remains actively engaged in several construction initiatives, including the STEAM Building project and the Building 500 Music Renovation.

LPC: Instructional Technology

  • Software Integration & Canvas Updates
    • Canvas is transitioning to a more secure LTI 1.3 integration process, affecting publisher packs and other software that instructors use.
    • These tools now require review for accessibility, security, and data privacy standards, bringing them under the committee’s purview.
  • Generative AI & Faculty Resources
    • Kat attended the Futures Summit, where Vision 2030 goals emphasized integrating generative AI into curriculum and student preparation for careers.
    • Numerous partnerships with Silicon Valley companies provide free AI tools for students and educators.
    • Tools like Google Gemini and Notebook LM are available but have not been activated due to ethical and logistical considerations
    • There’s a need to evaluate which tools to adopt and provide guidance for Faculty. Kat suggested possibly creating an infographic or “quick sheet” to help Faculty navigate options based on their AI adoption comfort level.
    • Concerns include tool longevity, potential costs, and District-wide standardization for consistent access.
  • District & State Initiatives
    • A District-wide AI workgroup has formed with representation from both Las Positas and Chabot to coordinate tools and training.
    • Regional professional development communities are emerging to support AI integration.
    • System-wide initiatives by the State Chancellor’s Office may influence adoption and funding of AI tools.
  • CVC Project Update
    • Progress has resumed after a pause due to IT workload and other transitions; updates will continue in future meetings.
  • Faculty Engagement
    • Webinars (CBC, OLI) and pilots like PlayLab and Notebook LM are being used to explore AI tools.
    • Faculty experience varies widely, from active AI integration to cautious exploration, highlighting the need for differentiated resources.

LPC: Website/Home Page Analytics

  • AI & Search Integration
    • Tim is exploring integrating AI (Gemini, ChatGPT) into LPC’s search results to improve information discovery.
    • He predicts that within the next five years, people will increasingly query AI chatbots directly rather than traditional browsers.
    • This shift will require restructuring the website to be more text-based, as AI relies on textual content for accurate responses.
    • Current experiments show that well-structured pages, like the prospective student page, are already being recognized by AI effectively.
  • Web Accessibility & Compliance
    • By April 2026, LPC’s website must comply with WCAG 2.3 standards.
    • The newer website template already passes accessibility scans; the remaining pages will be updated to match.
    • Certain older documents (pre-2024) are grandfathered in, so legacy PDFs may not need immediate updates.
  • Website Updates & Streamlining
    • Consolidated multiple “Steps to Success” landing pages into a single page for easier updates and student navigation.
    • Future changes may include additional pages for specific student groups (e.g., ESL) once the system stabilizes.
    • Overall, the LPC homepage and MyPortal integration are running more smoothly than before.

District: ITS

  • MyPortal & SSB9 Transition
    • July 1: All logins now go through MyPortal; ClassWeb is embedded within it.
    • Financial Aid Dashboard: Updated to a cleaner SSB9 version, enabling future financial aid cards pulling data directly from Banner.
    • Student Registration: New SSB9 registration tool launching soon with:
      • Single-page interface
      • Integration with Ed Plan for Degree Works
      • Visual weekly schedule preview
      • Simplified add/remove functionality
    • Multiple demos planned for faculty, administrators, and advisory groups.
    • Advisory Group: Launching January to guide card design, cross-functional representation.
  • Banner & Customization
    • Faculty pages and legacy customizations will transition to SSB9.
    • Moving toward Ellucian SaaS model means less customization flexibility; some legacy features will need replacement.
  • Help Desk & IT Tools
    • Evaluating new help desk software to replace ServiceNow, which is now oversized for LPC’s needs.
    • Rolled out password self-reset tool, useful for adjunct faculty returning after breaks.
  • Other Notes
    • Responding to Winter intersession priorities and SSB8 de-support by the end of the year.
