LPC: Instructional Technology

  • Accessibility Standards
    • The college continues its roadshow to inform campus groups about updated web accessibility standards taking effect this spring.
    • A recent Chancellor’s Office Memo clarifies that accessibility applies to the entire digital ecosystem — websites, LMS (Canvas), MyPortal, registration systems, and all online tools, including vendor software.
    • Colleges are expected to ensure accessibility, with very limited exceptions.
    • While no college feels fully ready, progress is being made.
    • The district is applying to join an Accessibility Capability Maturity Model cohort for a structured review.
    • Webinars are available for additional guidance.
    • Tools like Microsoft Office, Adobe, Canvas accessibility checkers, and ComplyBot are being promoted.
    • A VPAT/accessibility review form for new software requests is nearing implementation at the district level.
  • Data Privacy & Canvas Integration Updates
    • New technology review processes also focus on data privacy.
    • Canvas is transitioning from LTI 1.1 to LTI 1.3 (more secure but more complex).
    • District-wide Canvas integration creates challenges when campuses use different vendors (Example: bookstore integrations).
    • Adjustments are ongoing to avoid cross-campus disruptions.
  • AI & Academic Integrity
    • Ongoing discussions about generative and agentic AI tools (e.g., tools marketed directly to students for completing assignments).
    • Exploring whether platforms like Canvas can block AI agent logins.
    • A pilot of Respondus (secure browser) is underway with 10 instructors per campus.
    • Current license includes Proctorio; proctoring tools remain controversial due to privacy concerns.
    • Working to install Respondus on campus computers to reduce the need for personal device downloads.
    • Emphasis on providing student alternatives (computer center, in-person exams) to mitigate privacy concerns and potential legal challenges.
  • Professional Development
    • AI-focused Flex Day content is planned.
    • A full-day AI Professional Development Event is scheduled for April 17 through Regional and Chancellor’s Office collaboration.
    • AI continues to evolve rapidly, creating ongoing policy and instructional challenges.

LPC: Website/Home Page Analytics

  • An update on LPC website accessibility efforts ahead of the April 24 deadline.
    • The new website template (including the homepage template) passes accessibility scans and has been tested with screen readers.
    • The primary remaining task is converting older webpages still using outdated templates. Approximately 30 sites remain, though that number fluctuates as additional outdated pages are discovered. Some pages may be archived if programs are no longer active.
    • Updates were recently made to the Steps to Register page due to changes in MyPortal card titles. Tim noted the importance of improving communication when system changes occur to keep student-facing instructions accurate.
  • Faculty & Directory Updates
    • Faculty and directory profiles will soon be converted to the new template.
    • A planned enhancement includes adding a Print Door Card feature (related to faculty office hours), potentially built directly into Omni instead of linking to an external Excel document. Tim is exploring a more streamlined solution and welcomes input on formatting and expectations.
  • Accessibility Tools
    • Tim uses multiple tools to cross-check accessibility results, including:
      • WAVE
      • Axe browser extension
      • Pope Tech (state-provided tool)
      • A paid platform (formerly Monsido) — which powers the purple accessibility widget on LPC webpages
    • He emphasized that accessibility scanners sometimes flag template-level code issues incorrectly, so technical knowledge is needed to interpret results accurately.
    • Overall, LPC’s public-facing websites are largely in good shape, with remaining work focused on template conversions and ongoing monitoring. 95% accessibility compliance by default.

District: ITS

  • Bruce Griffin was out of the office today and will report at the next meeting on April 6.

6. New Business

Discuss Meeting Start Time for New Block Schedule

  • The Committee discussed how the new block schedule will impact the meeting time. The proposed block times are 1:00pm-2:25pm and 2:45pm-4:10pm, and the current meeting time is 1:30pm-3:30pm, which overlaps two blocks.
  • To better align with the block schedule and increase faculty participation, the group discussed potentially shortening the meeting from 2 hours to 90 minutes, which would allow it to fit within a single block. Andrea will check with Angelica to confirm whether adjusting the meeting length is permitted.
  • Members shared general preferences for a 1:00pm or 1:30pm start time, though concerns were raised about how certain lecture/lab courses scheduled back-to-back could be impacted depending on the meeting’s end time. Ending within a single block (by 2:25pm or 2:30pm) would minimize disruption.
  • The Committee agreed to revisit the item at the next meeting on April 6, confirm the allowable meeting length, and take a formal vote. The new block schedule will take effect in the fall.
