Equity Support Resources for Faculty
When foregrounding equity work with and for our students, it is important to hold to the idea that we are training them for their world, not ours. As professional educators, our training and our working environments are products of contexts that may, or may not, apply to our current students. We have to maintain a balance between providing them with strong disciplinary knowledge, and honoring the world and vocational environments they will graduate into. Prioritizing student equity is in no way reducing rigor, making things “easier” for students, or playing demographic favorites. What it is doing is addressing systemic barriers—barriers many of us may have encountered—to give every student the equal opportunity for success. However our student’s success isn’t our responsibility. Our responsibility is to set the conditions for success and give them the tools they need to navigate those conditions. And one of the primary ways we can accomplish this is by being equitable in all of our educational practices, from the way we develop our syllabi, to effort-based grading, to flexible assignment submission.
The goal of this website is to provide some support resources for faculty who interested in best practices for their classroom.
