Theater Arts Associate in Arts for Transfer (AA-T)

About the Program

The Theater Arts Associate in Arts for Transfer major is designed to provide knowledge, training, and practical experience in all aspects of theater arts. The curriculum provides the essential lower-division courses necessary for transfer to similar programs at four-year institutions, as well as assisting students towards employment in professional, academic and community theater. Upon completion, students can expect to be able to: apply the learned techniques of acting or technical theater in a public performance of various genres of theater, or other types of personal creative work; understand how to develop and maintain a positive contribution the field of theater in academics, performance, or technical theater; and possess the skills necessary for textual interpretation for academic discourse, design, and/or performance studies.

Career Opportunities

There are many careers available for an individual with a theater background: actor, director, playwright, dramaturgy, designer, producer, theater manager, publicist, or agent. All of these career paths are available for students in both theater and film, making a theater degree an ideal education for creative students in California.

Program Outcomes

  • Upon completion of the AA-T in Theater Arts, students are able to analyze the artistic elements in productions, looking at design, acting, and directorial choice.
  • Upon completion of the AA-T in Theater Arts, students are able to apply the learned techniques of acting or technical theater in a public performance of various genres of theater, or other types of personal creative work.
  • Upon completion of the AA-T in Theater Arts, students are able to possess the skills necessary for textual interpretation for academic discourse, design, and/or performance studies.
  • Upon completion of the AA-T in Theater Arts, students are able to understand how to develop and maintain a positive contribution the field of theater in academics, performance, or technical theater.
  • Upon completion of the AA-T in Theater Arts, students are able to understand the historical and cultural significance of theater through completion of projects in the technical theater courses and theater history class.

Completion Requirements:

  1. Completion of 60 semester units or 90 quarter units that are eligible for transfer to the California State University, including both of the following:
    1. The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) or CA State University General Education – Breadth Requirements.
    2. A minimum of 18 semester units or 27 quarter units in a major or area of emphasis, as determined by the community college district.
  2. Obtainment of a minimum grade point average of 2.0.

Associate Degrees for Transfer (ADT’s) also require that students must earn a "C " (or "P'') or better in all courses required for the major or area of emphasis.
