Learning-Aligned Employment Program for the Student

 

The Learning Aligned Employment Program (LAEP) places eligible underrepresented students in jobs and internships that relate to the student's area of study and helps students earn a decent wage while gaining valuable work experience. 

LAEP Internship Components 

  • Work up to 20 hours per week
  • Get paid to learn and apply skills related to your chosen major or career path 
  • Work with a local employer 

What's the Benefit?

Career-related jobs and internships can help you develop and refine your skills, explore future career paths and ease your transition into the work world.

According to NACE (National Association of Colleges and Employers), the majority of student interns are offered permanent employment upon completing their internship.

Eligibility Requirements 

  • Underrepresented student
  • Eligible to work in the United States
  • California resident
  • Meet Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements in a program leading to a degree or certificate* 
  • Demonstrate financial need through FAFSA or CADAA
  • Be in good academic standing (minimum 2.0 GPA)
  • Enrolled at least half-time (6 units). NOTE: for Summer LAEP participants, student must be enrolled half-time for the Summer (3 units) or subsequent Fall term.
  • Have declared a major at Las Positas College

*Students who have completed 15+ college units will receive priority. 

 

LAEP Process for Students

 

Step 1: Student Interest Form

Please fill out the form below if you are interested in participating in the LAEP program.

Step 2: Intake and Eligibility Verification

You will be contacted for an intake appointment to verify your eligibility for LAEP.

Step 3: Review Available LAEP Positions

You will be provided with a list of open LAEP positions so that you can determine which ones fit your major. LAEP internships must be related to a student's major or planned career path.

Step 4: Employment Preparation

1. Email your resume as a Word or GoogleDoc to Kristi Vanderhoof, Career Center Coordinator, at  kvanderhoof@laspositascollege.edu. She will set up an appointment to meet with you. Use the subject line "LAEP Student Resume" when sending your email.

If you do not have a current resume, email Kristi, and ask to set up an appointment to help create one. Use the subject line "LAEP Student Resume Creation."

2. Complete resume and interview workshops or modules that the Career Center Coordinator assigns to you. Attend a resume review appointment with the Career Center Coordinator.

3. Revise your resume, and prepare for a mock interview.

4. Attend mock interview with the Career Center Coordinator.

Step 5: Apply for LAEP positions

Submit your resume to the LAEP coordinator, Dr. Stuart McElderry, at  Lpc-Laep@laspositascollege.edu and let him know which of the LAEP posititions you would like to apply for. 

Step 6: Interview with Employer

The LAEP Coordinator will notify you if you are selected to interview with a LAEP employer or not.

If you need assistance with obtaining professional interview clothing, you will be provided with a gift card to purchase it before your interview.

Step 7: Hiring

You will be notified if the employer decided to offer you a conditional offer of employment.

If you are selected, you will complete the following:

  • Employer's required paperwork
  • LAEP Student Agreement

Step 8: Enrolling in WRKX 94

Once you have completed all required paperwork, and the employer has notified you that you can start work, enroll in Work Experience 94 in order to get credit for completing your internship.

Step 9: Followup

LPC will check in with you to see how your internship is going and ask if there are any changes in your eligibility.

You agree to notify LPC if your contact information changes or if there are any changes in your eligibility for the LAEP program.
