DANC 1 - Introduction to Dance

Introduction to the dance technique specific to ballet, modern and jazz dance. Similarities and differences found in each dance form will be explored. The history of ballet, modern and jazz dance will be examined. 54 hours laboratory.

DANC 2A - Jazz Dance Fundamentals Beginning
1 unit
This course covers various movement forms with an emphasis on rhythm, style and proper techniques. Students will learn a variety of jazz phrases and will be expected to perform a jazz dance at the introductory level by the end of the semester. 54 hours laboratory.

DANC 2B - Jazz Dance Beginning/ Intermediate
1 unit
This course covers various movement forms with an emphasis on rhythm, style and proper techniques. Students will learn a variety of jazz phrases and will be expected to choreograph and perform a jazz dance at the advanced beginning/intermediate level by the end of the semester. Strongly Recommended: DANC 2A with a minimum grade of C. 54 hours laboratory.

DANC 3A - Ballet Fundamentals/Beginning
1 unit
Introduction to the fundamentals of ballet, including barre, center and across the floor technique. Proper body connectivity, alignment, strength and flexibility will be emphasized. 54 hours laboratory.

DANC 4A - Modern/Contemporary Dance A
1 unit
Beginning level instruction in the Contemporary Modern Dance technique. Emphasis on proper body alignment and body connectivity will be addressed. Students will be introduced to the elements of dance and transfer these elements into their technical practice. 54 hours laboratory.

DANC 4B - Modern/Contemporary Dance B
1 unit
Elementary to Intermediate level instruction in the Contemporary Modern Dance technique. Continued emphasis on proper body alignment and body connectivity will be addressed. Students will be expected to incorporate the elements of dance into their technical practice. Strongly Recommended: DANC 4A with a minimum grade of C. 54 hours laboratory.

DANC 5A - Dance Composition 5A
1.5 units
An introduction to the art of making dances for choreographers working in any style of dance, this course is open to students who have little or no dance training. 81 hours laboratory.

DANC 5B - Dance Composition 5B

A continuation to the art of making dances for choreographers working in any style of dance. 81 hours laboratory.

DANC 6A - Dance Production - Choreography A
2 units
Exploration of choreographic principles along with stage presentation leading to a full-length concert. Participation in dance works either as a choreographer or performer. Minimal participation in technical and business aspects of production. Strongly Recommended: DANC 5A with a minimum grade of C or DANC 5B with a minimum grade of C. 108 hours laboratory.

DANC 6B - Dance Production - Choreography B
2 units
Choreograph dance works specifically for a full length stage production. Involved participation in the technical, creative and business aspects of stage production. Strongly Recommended: DANC 5A with a minimum grade of C or DANC 5B with a minimum grade of C. 108 hours laboratory.

Independent Study

Independent Study courses are open to all students and employ many combinations of media and educational techniques to create individualized, self-pacing education. Check with the Counseling Center, Building 1600, concerning transferability of Independent Study courses to four-year institutions. Independent Study is contracted through an instructor for research, field experience, or skill development. Independent Study is offered under many subject areas contained in the Catalog using the number 29. Transfer: CSU; UC credit may be granted only after review of course outline by specific UC campus after transfer. Independent Study courses have a grading option of "OP" unless otherwise indicated.
