ENG 110 CRAFT OF THE SENTENCE
2 UNITS
Practice in sentence-level writing that focuses on possibilities rather than rules, as well as editing in any genre of writing, including—but not limited to—academic writing. Practice in writing and editing sentences that achieve desired stylistic effects based on the writing situation and audience. Develops strategies to communicate complex ideas at the sentence level. Discusses multifaceted and changing nature of language and writing. This course is open to students currently enrolled in English 1A or 1AEX, or students who have passed English 1A or 1AEX or the equivalent. Prerequisite: ENG 1A with a minimum grade of C (May be taken concurrently) or ENG 1AEX with a minimum grade of C (May be taken concurrently). 36 hours lecture.

ESL 113 SPEAKING AND LISTENING FLUENCY FOR ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL PURPOSES
2 UNITS
This is an oral communication course that will enable students to develop advanced speaking and listening fluency for academic and professional purposes. ESL 113 will enable students to fluently use linguistic forms accurately, meaningfully and appropriately, emphasizing academic and professional discourse. Students will practice listening and responding to academic lectures and presentations like TED Talks, including note-taking, summarizing, and other forms of critical analysis. Speaking practice will emphasize advanced rhetorical strategies through group discussions, debates, impromptu speeches and oral presentations and cultural norms in academic and professional contexts. It is the fifth and highest level of the ESL Speaking and Listening Fluency Pathway. Prerequisite: ESL 123 with a minimum grade of P or NESL 223 with a minimum grade of P or ESL 126 with minimum grade of P or NESL 226 with a minimum grade of P. Enrollment Limitation: Placement into Advanced ESL couress through the ESL Assessment Process. 36 hours lecture, 18 hours laboratory.
