K-9 THERAPY DOGS AT THE LPC VETERANS RESOURCE CENTER

Pat Wheeler is a therapy dog handler with her dogs and the Tester/Observer for the Alliance of Therapy Dogs (ATD). She coordinates therapy dogs activities at Las Positas College. These include visits once or twice a month for the Health & Wellness Center, with several therapy dog teams, and visits every month at the VRC, with one therapy dog team. She also provides therapy dogs teams for sites and programs throughout the Bay Area, including events for the Pleasanton Military Families, the Diablo Valley Flag Brigade, the Viet Nam Vets of Diablo Valley, and the Valor Games Far West. They also visit hospitals, nursing homes, rehab centers, senior care homes, assisted living and memory care facilities, schools, libraries, shelters, and program for children and adults with disabilities.
Pat has been a therapy dog handler since 2002 and has about 3,500 hours visiting with her dogs. She has also tested and observed about 60 therapy dog teams throughout the Bay Area since December 2013. She is registered with the Alliance of Therapy Dogs (ATD), headquartered in Cheyenne, Wyoming. ATD registers and provides insurance for therapy dog teams throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, US Territories, and Canada. It has about 14,000 members. In the Spring 2016 term, therapy dogs teams will be in building 1600 near the Counseling Center from 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM on the following days—January 28, February 24, March 23, April 21, May 18, and May 19. A therapy dog team will visit the VRC on January 21, 1:00, February 17, 4:00 PM; March 17, 1:00 PM; April 13, 4:00 PM; May 24, 1:00 PM; and May 25, 1:00.
