About THE DROWSY CHAPERONE:
Winner of five Tony Awards, including Best Book and Best Original Score, The Drowsy Chaperone is a loving send-up of the Jazz Age musical, featuring one show-stopping song and dance number after another. With the houselights down, a man in a chair appears on stage and puts on his favorite record: the cast recording of a fictitious 1928 musical. The recording comes to life and The Drowsy Chaperone begins as the man in the chair looks on. Hailed by New York Magazine as "The Perfect Broadway Musical," The Drowsy Chaperone is a masterful meta-musical, poking fun at all the tropes that characterize the musical theatre genre.
"I like to refer to the show as “a musical comedy with heart”. One of the great things about this show is that it has a large cast, consisting of 13 people who have leading roles, plus a singing/dancing chorus. It also has a good balance between male and female roles, both the leads and the chorus. Except for the Man in Chair, everyone in the cast sings and dances. Many of the roles call for people who are good at both, but for a few of the lead roles, you only need to be a passable dancer." - Ken Ross, Director

For the Audition
Prepare and bring sheet music for a musical comedy song (but not from this show). One verse only. Can be up tempo or ballad, but something comic preferred. Also bring a contrasting musical comedy song in case we want to hear a second song. Please bring a Headshot/Resume if you have one.

March 8-17, 2019. Fri/Sat at 8PM, Sun at 2PM
|Man in Chair – a charming, engaging, man with a dry sense of humor. Doesn’t dance and only sings a very small amount near the end of the show, so he doesn’t need to be that good a singer.|
|Robert Martin – a famous Broadway and Hollywood leading man. The groom about to marry Janet. Debonair, cheerful, and a little cheesy. Needs to be a good singer and tap dancer, and needs to be able to skate on roller skates.|
|Aldolpho – A European lothario and womanizer. Very confident and stuck on himself, in a humorous way. A vigorous buffoon. Speaks with a fake Spanish accent.|
|Mr Feldzieg (a take off on Florenz Ziegfeld, the famous real Broadway producer). Self-important, determined, powerful. Currently a nervous wreck because his star (Janet) is about to get married and leave show business.|
|George – The wedding’s Best Man. Loyal, good natured, conscientious and nervous. Needs to tap dance.|
|Underling – Mrs Tottendale’s (see below) butler and servant. Proper, stoic, with a dry sense of humor. Very patient, though Mrs T’s behavior makes that difficult. English accent.|
|Two Gangsters – Comic gangsters posing as pastry chefs. They’ve been hired to collect on a debt incurred by Feldzieg. Jovial rather than really threatening. Vaudeville-like performers good at comic word play. New York accents. They don’t have to be short in stature as the script suggests.|
|Janet – Broadway musical star performer. An attractive, vivacious ingenue, with an outgoing personality. A strong dancer. Special skills like acrobatics would be a plus. The bride to be.|
|The Drowsy Chaperone – Janet’s confidant and friend. A carefree, melodramatic, and scene stealing diva. Loves alcohol.|
|Kitty – A not-too-bright chorus girl. Somewhat annoying, but not mean. Eager to get the lead role when Janet leaves show business.|
|Mrs. Tottendale – Wealthy hostess of the wedding. Delightfully spacey. Forgetful and ditzy, but always charming.|
|Trix – A confident and upbeat Aviatrix (flyer of airplanes). She only appears in the first and last scenes of the show, but she sings a solo. In theatrical terminology, she serves as the shows “deus-ex-machina” – in other words, she “saves the day” at the show’s end.|
|Singing and dancing chorus – Probably three or four men and three or four women. Singer/dancers. They play various roles, including servants in Mrs Tottendale’s mansion.|
|Apartment Building Superintendent - A small speaking role near the end of the show. Male. Should look, speak and act like he'd be a person who wouldn't like musicals (whatever that means)|
